Fighting the mosquito without toxins!
Every year I go on holiday and every year I get eaten alive by the dreaded mosquito, I know there’s sprays out there to protect yourself but appear almost toxic… ‘Jungle’ strength repellent! Full of powerful ingredients, putting me right off applying. So resigned to the fact that this years battle with the little feckers would be no different….
At the end of August we spent a weekend in the Cotswolds celebrating my Mums 70th, in cabins around a lake and had the worst attack to date. Midges, mozzies whatever they were had an almighty munch on my ankles – must have had 20 bites, leaving a dot-to-dot of scars (attractive!). Therefore, as I prepared for a two-week holiday to Ibiza I almost relented and bought the ‘Jungle’ spray but was attracted by Neals Yard Organics solution, a more natural repellent in the form of a citronella formula containing organic content. Um, would that really deter a determined mosquito?? Not sure, (lets be clear it’s not advised as a repellent) but prepared to give it a go, and cutting out the detail of my rather AMAZING Ibiza holiday and getting right to it…. it was bloody AWESOME! I had absolutely ZERO attacks and I know it wasn’t due to the lack of the little bleeders as other members of the group got eaten. In-fact one of my lovely friends received a feasting frenzy one evening and following that she used my Neals Yard Citronella formula and was left alone there on in. Thus, concluding it WORKS (well it did for me)
I’m fast becoming a super fan of ‘Neals Yard Organics’, their products are beautiful, organic and ethical – they also work and quite prepared to invest in products that not only “Do What They Say on The Tin” but are fairtrade, completely void of all animal testing (leaping bunny logo) and organically produced…. LOVE LOVE LOVE
So, the detail of the citronella formula:
Organic essential oils and witch hazel are combined in this aromatic, citrussy blend. An ideal holiday or garden companion – it smells lovely (unlike the potent mosquito repellents!)
- Fresh citrusy scent
- Skin cooling
- Helps repel midges & mosquitos
How to Use:
Spray over exposed skin. At first the skin will feel moist but will then quickly dry. Approximate effective duration 2 hours. Re-apply after swimming or as required. Caution: Due to the concentration of essential oils in this blend it is not advisable for children under 2 years of age.
Alcohol denat., Hamamelis virginiana (Witch hazel) extract, Aqua, Cymbopogon nardus (Citronella) oil*, Pinus sylvestris (Pine) oil*, Lavandula angustifolia (Lavender) oil*, Cupressus sempervirens (Cypress) leaf oil*, Eucalyptus globulus (Eucalyptus) leaf oil*, Citrus aurantium dulcis (Orange) peel oil*, Thymus vulgaris (Thyme) oil*, Thymus mastichina (Spanish marjoram) oil*, Laurus nobilis (Bay) oil*, Eugenia caryophyllus (Clove) bud oil*, Citral, Citronellol, Coumarin, Eugenol, Farnesol, Geraniol, Isoeugenol, Limonene, Linalool.

Other Holiday Products In the Neals Yard Organic Range…
The frankincense cooling facial mist is LUSH, I used it all the time on holiday when feeling hot and sweaty, it’s also great for the plane when feeling dehydrated, refreshing and smells glorious.
I didn’t take the suncream as was out of stock (popular and being the busy holiday period) but based on experience with other products I’ll definitely be ordering early next year! Also didn’t try the aftersun as had some left over from last year.
