Are you making plans for your retirement? (No we’re not selling pensions!) Perhaps looking forward to being able to travel the world, spend time with family and friends, take up a new hobby or simply have more time for yourself?
When are you hoping to retire, 10 years (if you’re lucky), 20, maybe 30, by which time you may not be fit enough to do all the things you’d love to?
So why does it need to wait until you retire? Do you need to have stopped working to start enjoying life to the full, getting more out of each precious day before it’s too late – that’s the harsh fact, which many of us , me included, chose to ignore! The answer is “NO, you don’t have to wait” that’s the philosophy behind Lifestyle Design.
This isn’t a new concept, Timothy Ferris wrote about it back in 2007, he didn’t create it but did give it a label people could understand, as well as giving a number of techniques by which we can design the lifestyle we crave. Of course, since then there have been many more resources where you can learn more about this way of life, some of which we will share along the way.
In short, as time is so precious, Lifestyle Design is a way for us to design the life we want, rather than accepting the status quo and letting the world dictate it for you.
Everyone has their own individual goals and dreams or a vision of what they want from their lives, so it is up to you to decide how it applies to you; we simply want to put the concept out there and share any number of ideas on how you can get more out of life. Whether that be great days or nights out, your dream holiday or short break, life improvement or educational courses, charities to support or just the simple things in life which put a smile on your face and give you happiness, the list could go on and on because it’s not about us all wanting the same things. Infact it’s not even applicable to everyone, as I’m certain some of you are more than happy with your lives just the way they are and if you are one of those people please share what makes you happy.
If you are at a point where you would like to feel more fulfilled, we believe it is about taking stock and designing a life where you can follow your passions and dreams to make your life the happiest it can be – what have you got to lose? Start by asking yourself a few questions:-
- Why are you here? (we don’t mean the birds and the bees!)
- What do you want to achieve in this world? (Anything is possible)
- What excites you?
- What do you love to do the most?
- Where would you most like to do it?
- Who would you most like to do it with?
- What sort of impact on others do you hope to make doing what you do?
Once you have the answers, try putting together a plan of how you can incorporate them into your life and then put your plan into action!
We’d love to hear what makes you happy and any recommendations would be gratefully received. Even small changes can make a big difference, to start us off here are a few ideas:-
- take up meditation (as little as 10 minutes a day clears your head)
- get back to nature – go for a walk in the countryside or woods
- have a date night (we recommend with your other half)
- book a weekend away (as above)
- or stay home and get someone to have the kids overnight
- volunteer for a charity dear to your heart
- take up a new hobby
- get a job you love (change is scary but it soon passes)
